Neptune, spotted in 1989 from NASA’s Voyager 2 spacecraft.
THE ICE GIANT NEPTUNE is the furthest known planet in our solar system, and has an atmosphere composed largely of hydrogen and helium. Neptune also has vast streaks of cloud that consist of frozen methane and ammonia. From space, Neptune’s atmosphere appears quite serene, thanks to its bright blue color. It is, however, anything but calm. The Great Dark Spot in the center of this image is an enormous storm system extending the width of Earth that swirls around the planet, creating winds of 2,100 kilometers per hour (1,300 miles per hour). The isolated white patch appearing here a little below the Great Dark Spot is a region of cloud dubbed the “Scooter.” This is because the persistent cloud feature rotates faster around the planet, lapping the Dark Spot every 12 rotations. The calm-looking Neptune turns out to have some of the strongest winds in the whole of our solar system.

A traveling volutus, or roll cloud, spotted by Jean Louis Drye as it sweeps over his cargo ship off the coast of São Paulo, Brazil.
ROLL CLOUDS, KNOWN OFFICIALLY AS VOLUTUS, form within a traveling wave of air. One can sometimes travel ahead of an advancing storm, but it is more commonly produced by the interaction of sea breezes. This is why roll clouds tend to be spotted over coastal waters. The rising air at the front of the wave and the dipping air at the back are not visible, just the rotating roll of cloud in the middle, but they can be felt as shifting air currents. “There was a sudden strong wind,” reported Jean Louis Drye, who spotted the formation, “just as the cloud was passing over.”

Stratus, spotted by Filip Gavanski over the Roppongi district of Tokyo, Japan.
A BUILDING WITH ITS HEAD IN THE CLOUDS is in the grey, featureless world of the Stratus cloud. Stratus is the lowest of the ten main cloud types. Though beautiful when viewed from above, it can feel close, even oppressive, from below. When it forms down at ground level Stratus is known as fog or mist, but up at 450 meters (1,500 feet) where it often lurks, it is the sky that skyscrapers scrape.

A Stratocumulus sunset at lunchtime. Spotted in the middle of the day over Great Salt Lake, Utah, US, by Jeremy Hanks (Member 41,507).
WE ARE USED TO SEEING CLOUDS turn pink at the beginning and the close of day as they reflect the rosy hues of the low Sun. But this Stratocumulus cloud over Utah, US, appeared pink at 1.00 pm. What on Earth could cause clouds to be colored like this at lunchtime? The cause is indeed found on Earth. The pink patch on the cloud’s underside is a reflection of the Great Salt Lake below. Its waters can develop a distinctly reddish hue due to the salt-loving bacteria that thrive in its highly saline environment. They are tiny microbes with the power to summon sunsets in the middle of the day.

Pileus on top of Cumulus congestus, spotted by Jaap van den Biesen and Nienke Edelenbosch over Nkhata Bay, Malawi.
THESE TWO CLOUD CAPS, known as pileus, developed in Malawi over the top of Cumulus congestus clouds that were well on their way to maturing into Cumulonimbus storm clouds. Pileus can appear as airstreams overhead that are lifted by the Cumulus’s rising convection currents, which can be extremely powerful in the tropics. The delicate-looking caps are like lenticularis or mountain cap clouds that have formed not over mountainous terrain but mountains of Cumulus. Droplets form where the airflow lifts and cools, only to evaporate away again as it sinks back down and warms beyond the cloudy obstacle. Being so short-lived, the droplets tend to be small and even in size—perfect for diffracting the sunlight and separating it into pearlescent colors. These can be just visible if you look carefully. Clearly, not every cloud has a silver lining. Some clouds have subtle multicolored ones.

Altocumulus perlucidus, spotted over Mount Fuji, Japan, in around 1830 by Katsushika Hokusai.
WHEN THE CLOUDLETS in a layer of mid-level Altocumulus have gaps between them like this, they are described as perlucidus. This print by the 19th-century Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai is from his classic series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji. It is titled South Wind, Clear Sky (Gaifū kaisei). That strikes us as a bit of a misnomer.

A parhelic circle and 120-degree parhelion caused by diamond dust, spotted by Richard Corrigall (Member 4,393) over La Plagne, France.
THE COLD WINTER AIR high in the French Alps is perfect for forming the glittering ice-crystal mist called diamond dust. When ice crystals grow slowly in drier conditions, they can form as tiny, clear, hexagonal prisms that bend and bounce sunlight to form all manner of curious spots and rings across the sky, known collectively as halo phenomena. The curved line of light appearing here is one such phenomenon, called a parhelic circle. It is a white band that runs parallel to the horizon, sometimes extending 360 degrees around the whole sky. It is always at the same height as the Sun, and tends to be a very fleeting effect. The bright spot appearing along the parhelic circle here is called a 120-degree parhelion. This is similar to a regular parhelion, known as a sun dog, but it is colorless, much further away from the Sun, and far less frequently spotted.

Altocumulus castellanus, spotted over northwest Oregon, US, by Sallie Tisdale (Member 42,126).
THE CLOUD SPECIES known as castellanus is not the most distinctive of formations. In fact, it is easily missed, even by cloudspotters. But castellanus clouds like these spotted by Sallie Tisdale over Oregon, US, are worth looking out for because they often forecast storms later in the day. The cloud’s turrets indicate that the atmosphere up at the cloud level is unstable. When the crenellations of castellanus appear in Altocumulus clouds like these, they indicate that the unstable air is up at the mid-level of the clouds. This is significant. It suggests that any Cumulus clouds building from below as the day progresses will, upon reaching the unstable air, just keep growing. They’ll likely continue to develop taller and taller until they’ve matured into Cumulonimbus storm clouds. “The sky was active all day,” Sallie confirmed, “and that night we did indeed have thunderstorms.”
