intro谈读诗的时候说when they thought they were bothered and bewildered, they were in fact being bewitched🥺

Blake: The reason Milton wrote in fetters when he wrote of Angels & God, and at liberty when of Devils & Hell, is because he was a true Poet and of the Devil's party without knowing it.

innocence is not wise✔️wisdom cannot be innocent✔️to do good we have to leave childhood behind❌

The true end of human life, I found myself saying, was not redemption by a nonexistent Son of God, but the gaining and transmission of wisdom. Innocence is not wise, and wisdom cannot be innocent, and if we are going to do any good in the world, we have to leave childhood behind.

A mind not to be changed by place or time.
The mind is its own place, and in itself
Can make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven.

HAMLET
Why then ’tis none to you; for there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so. To me it is a prison.
ROSENCRANTZ
Why then your ambition makes it one. ’Tis too narrow for your mind.
HAMLET
O God, I could be bounded in a nutshell, and count myself a king of infinite space—were it not that I have bad dreams.
GUILDENSTERN
Which dreams indeed are ambition, for the very substance of the ambitious is merely the shadow of a dream.
HAMLET
A dream itself is but a shadow.

弥尔顿形容路西法的圆盾:the broad circumference hung on his shoulders like the moon, whose orb through optic glass the Tuscan artist views……in her spotty globe.

:blobcatcozy: 非常熟练地deals in absolutes:better to reign in hell, than serve in heaven,或者:awake, arise, or be forever fallen
同时又是the chosen one (literally bruh you were God's favourite kid) 由于自我认知里高尚的动机背叛了长久以来陈腐的统治✌

再读到他评价弥尔顿在BOOK II对语言的驾驭:sensuous power of the language
Pullman:no one, not even Shakespeare, surpasses Milton in his command (...) of English words
